peace falls gently

On holy nights …

when the world stands still before him; when the filtered glory of the Son is felt and seen and heard; when evening hours are filled with calm surrender; when angelic wings and Spirit songs carry a message of his presence which settles storms and gives rise to praise

peace falls gently.

On holy nights …

when tranquil trust outlines sparse hope and settles in to quiet chaos hovering in frantic days; when living words waiting to be heard land softly on the soul; when a deep hush covers the world we serve with furrows of forgiveness and silvery highlights of pure love

peace falls gently.

Jesus, the Christ, has come.

But not all nights are holy.

As darkness descends we may experience power grabs, stabbed in the back or tending to the wounds of others who have been nabbed by those who’ve done harm, alarmingly close to the heart of who we all are apart from the reconciling work of Christ shining into our lives.

Even wise men and women sometimes give up following the starlight of his call to loving servanthood either momentarily or across the passing of many moons, and the light of the Spirit of Christ in our dealings with each other grows dim.

Like shimmering lunar beams through the early morning hours, peace can easily slip away.

But it still falls gently in the turning of our days because he is ever near.

Will we notice … will we let it fall on us … will we let it light our way … will we remember that Jesus has come even here, even now with deep breaths of peace made visible in the cold of nighttime struggle, crystal clear that in him we live and move and have our being?

Perhaps this has been a season of suffering or disappointing fears where signs of bright hope are hard to detect much less follow, where we see only faint hints of elusive signs of grace in the far distance and wonder if it’s so far down the road we may not reach the place of his leading.

Yet, the twinkle of love in Jesus’ eyes beckons us to continue the journey of faith and find his presence being born into uncertain destinations.  Reflections of his shalom continue to fall gently moment by moment, each night made holy when we fall on our knees to repeat the ageless song that God has stepped into our world.

We are being led by his abiding favour through a Saviour, Christ the Lord.

Anointed Prince of Peace, light our way to be peacemakers in this troubled world. Settle into our every decision and thought, helping us to keep our eyes on you.  May your peace fall gently on each one caught by sounds of howling wolves or trapped in paralyzing fear unsure of stepping onto paths hidden in the shadows.

You who passes all understanding, sustain your servants in the comfort of your peace through all the days and nights ahead.  Amen.’

‘And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.  This will be a sign to you:   You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests.”  (Luke 2: 8-14)

He is more than able to light any night sky we are experiencing with his peace.
